Recognized as the 20th century’s greatest living Cuban-American folk artist, Mario Sanchez enjoyed a career of 70+ years before his death in 2005 at age 96. In 2017, he became the first Key West artist honored by inclusion in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This documentary explores his life and work—intaglios on cedar wood depicting all manner of Key West characters in vivid primary colors—and his significance in local history.
